This information supports Girlguiding UK's Membership and Recruitment Policy. Please read it together with the Policy.

Girls and young women

If there is a problem with the behaviour of a young member, the Unit Team will try to work with her to resolve it. If this fails, a Unit Leader may suspend a member of her unit for unsatisfactory behaviour as follows:

  • Rainbow Guide: at her discretion.
  • Brownie Guide: at her discretion.
  • Guide: in consultation with the Patrol Leaders' Council.
  • Senior Section member: in consultation with the Look Wider Team or equivalent. A Young Leader working with a Rainbow Guide, Brownie Guide or Guide unit may be suspended in consultation with the District Commissioner and the appropriate Senior Section Leader.

The Leader must:

  • consult her Commissioner before asking a member to leave the unit
  • explain to an adult with parental responsibility for the girl or young woman why the action is being taken.

Adult members

The County Commissioner concerned may temporarily withdraw a Leader, a Commissioner or an Adviser/Coordinator from her role pending further consultations within the County or Country/Region, or a formal enquiry.

Withdrawing permission to undertake a role in guiding

The County Commissioner can withdraw permission after consultation with other appropriate Commissioner(s) and following the guidelines laid down by the Association's Executive Committee. The same process is used for both members and recognised volunteers undertaking a role within guiding.

Usually the reason for the withdrawal will be given in confidence to the person concerned, but Girlguiding UK reserves the right in exceptional circumstances to withdraw someone from a role without giving a reason.
