Those arranging the transportation of members must ensure that
there is adequate insurance cover for any vehicle used during a
guiding activity. Some policies exclude cover for transportation
other than personal/family business and may not cover
transportation of non-family members.
If Members and Recognised Volunteers use their own vehicle for
Girlguiding UK volunteering, please read the Drivers Handbook as it
provides information on your responsibilities.
Girlguiding UK volunteering is defined as travelling to and from
meetings, trainings, activities or residential events as a
volunteer leader or unit helper, including transporting other
members, including children.
Carrying more passengers than the normal seating capacity of the
vehicle may invalidate vehicle insurance cover.
The loss of a no-claims bonus that arises from an accident while
on a guiding activity, or payment of the excess, is not covered by
the Association's insurance.
Buying your own
Vehicle
You will need to take out insurance if you own a vehicle. This
can be arranged through one of Girlguiding
UK's Insurance Service provider Unity Insurance Services.
Hiring a
vehicle
There are statutory insurance requirements when hiring a
vehicle. The Leader must ensure that the cover offered is adequate
and correct for the purpose.
Hiring a vehicle from a
company
When using a vehicle from a hire company, insurance is normally
purchased at the same time and the premium forms part of the total
charge. A hire company's policy usually offers comprehensive cover
for the vehicle, plus third party and passenger liability.
It is possible to hire a vehicle and take out separate insurance
cover, though this is not regularly available. Persons signing hire
agreements must comply with all clauses.
Hiring or borrowing a vehicle
from another organisation
When hiring or borrowing a vehicle from another organisation, it
is important to check what, if any, insurance cover is available.
If none is provided, separate insurance cover must be purchased. If
the vehicle being hired or borrowed is a minibus this cover can be
arranged at no cost through one of Girlguiding UK's insurance
service providers, AON. Please try to give at least five
days' notice.
Hiring or borrowing a vehicle
from an individual
When hiring or borrowing a vehicle from an individual, it is
usually necessary to purchase a specific policy so that the
individual's policy is not exposed or to be added to the
other person’s insurance policy. Where the cover is for any driver
you should check that the use allows the hire or loan of the
vehicle to you.
