This list contains free software known to, and
used by, staff in Girlguiding UK’s Technology Services Department.
Please note:
- appearance on the list does not imply any official endorsement
of the software by Girlguiding UK
- Girlguiding UK staff cannot provide any individual support or
advice relating to this software
- Girlguiding UK accepts no responsibility for any issues arising
from the installation and use of any software by its members.
Firewall
- The firewall built into Windows (XP, Vista and 7) is adequate,
but must be switched on.
- Zone Alarm is often recommended as
good value and reliable.
- Wireless routers may contain a built-in firewall. This needs to
be switched on; it will then protect the whole home network.
Note: No more than one
firewall should be run on any computer at the same time.
Anti-virus
software
Note: No more than one
anti-virus product should be run on any computer at the same
time.
Anti-spyware
Note: it is safe to install
more than one anti-spyware product on a computer at the same time.
Users could try installing two of the products listed.
