Events run by Senior Section members

Download this page as a pdf

Senior Section members may work towards and gain permits to run, under certain conditions, holidays and camps without an adult Leader.

Details of peer group residential events, Senior Section Permits and the supporting roles can be found in Senior Section publications and on the Senior Section web pages.

Peer group residential events

These are events run by a team of Senior Section members working together, with no single participant in charge.

A group of between four and seven Senior Section members may run a residential event for themselves provided that:

  • they have approval from their Leader and Commissioner for the event and the venue (by completing the Residential Event Notification form)
  • an adult supervisor who is within 30 minutes’ travelling time and available at all times is appointed for the event
  • every member receives training for the event as required
  • written permission is obtained from an adult with parental responsibility for each participant under the age of 18 for her to take part in the event, by completing a Consent for Event/Activity form.
  • every participant completes a Health Information form
  • the group provides a home contact list for the supervisor and themselves.

Note: At peer group events, recruitment checks for those over the age of 16 are not required.

Senior Section Overnight Permit and Senior Section Permit

Details of Senior Section Permits can be found in Senior Section publications and on the Senior Section web pages.

Qualifications to run an overnight event

A Senior Section member who holds, or is working to gain, a Senior Section Overnight Permit may run an overnight event lasting up to 24 hours for up to eight Guides or Senior Section members.

Qualification required to run a holiday, camp or expedition

A Senior Section member who holds, or is working to gain, a Senior Section Permit may run a camp, holiday or expedition lasting two or more nights for up to eight Guides or Senior Section members.

Regulations

The Senior Section member holding or working towards the permit must ensure she has:

  • approval from her Leader for the event and the venue (and route plans if going on an expedition; see the walking pages of the A to Z of activities) - the Residential Notification form is used to seek approval.
  • written permission is obtained from an adult with parental responsibility for each participant under the age of 18 for her to take part in the event, by completing a Consent for Event/Activity form.
  • ensured that every participant completes a Health Information form.
  • ensured that any adventurous activities are carried out in accordance with the regulations in the A to Z of activities.
  • an adult supervisor who is within 30 minutes’ travelling time and available at all times must be appointed for the event. The adult must be contactable by the group throughout the event.
  • Two people may be assessed for this permit at the same venue and may share activity sessions. However, in every other respect the events must be planned and run separately, with each candidate working with up to eight Guides or Senior Section members.

Any Senior Section member over the age of 16 holding or working towards her permit and taking away girls under the age of 16, must complete the Girlguiding UK recruitment checks and be listed on Go! as a Unit Residential Occasional Helper.

Senior Section International Module

This is an extention module to the Senior Section Permit where a member is able to take a group of up to eight Senior Section members abroad.

Before you can take this module, however, you need to hold a permit with the relevant modules for the type of holiday planned (ie module 7 for a camp and module 9 for an expedition.  An overnight permit is not sufficient).

If any group member is under the age of 16, the permit holder must be aged at least 18.

Talk to your Senior Section Leader/Advisor at the earliest module if you are planning on taking this module and keep in touch with her and your mentor while you are working on it.

If going overseas with The Scout Association or another organisation, or participating in expeditions such as the Explorer Belt, please read the guidance:
