Sky lanterns and helium balloons
Download this
page as a pdf
Sky lanterns and helium balloons are often released at events
and celebrations.
Girlguiding UK does not endorse this
practice due to the negative environmental impacts. Once
the objects fall back to earth they can be hazardous to animals,
food safety and the environment. Sky lanterns also pose a fire
risk.
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) are
also calling for these lanterns to be banned due to their
similarity to emergency red flares.
