Advice on what to do in the
case of accidents and incidents
- Try not to panic, keep calm.
- Ensure you, the participants and the
leadership team are safe.
- Carry out any necessary first aid.
- Call the emergency services, if
appropriate.
- Advise your home
contact if appropriate.
- Do not admit liability.
- Listen as impartially as possible to all
parties concerned in the incident.
- Report the incident as soon as possible to
your Commissioner; brief her fully on the situation.
- Keep careful notes about the incident and
subsequent developments as they happen, including: dates, times and
names.
- Keep copies of any written information.
- Get witness names and addresses.
- If an accident results in an injury which
needs medical/hospital treatment, or if any serious illness occurs
during a guiding activity, the Leader must report the details as
soon as possible to the Association’s insurance service.
- Download a Notification of Accident
or Incident form.
Dealing with enquiries from
the media
In the event of a crisis don't respond
to any media enquiries – take the caller's details, say someone
will call them back and ring the
Commonwealth Headquarters (CHQ) Press Office where someone
will support you.
