Blue green algae

Description

Blue green algae is a bacterial organism that can be found in ponds, lakes and other inland water, or in the sea during summer. It can be identified by its distinctive blue-green colour.

 

Symptoms

The symptoms are usually mild but in some cases can be severe.  Coming into contact with blue green algae can cause any, or all of the following symptoms in humans:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Skin rashes
  • Eye irritation
  • Muscle or joint pain
 

What to do

If you experience any of these symptoms consult your doctor and state that you have taken part in water sports.
