Zip wire

Description

A short wire down which participants travel until feet are grounded and the participant is able to stand up and dismount.  Often found in parks and playgrounds.

Zip wires over 3m high are called Aerial Runways, these have more strict regulations.

 

Who can participate?

Open to all.

 

Ratio of adults to girls

Normal ratios for activities away from the meeting place are required.  Guiding Manual ratios

 

Regulations

  • The Leader must ensure that all participants under the age of 18 have written permission to take part from an adult with parental responsibility.
  • The local Commissioner must be informed that the activity is taking place.
  • Carry out a risk assessment for the activity.
 

Instructor qualifications

Not applicable.

 

Useful information

Zip wires are mainly used in purpose-built playgrounds and are covered by local council rules and regulations.

A zip wire which is built at a greater height (over 3 metres) is classed as an Aerial runway and has further regulations.
