Description

This activity involves travelling down grass slopes on specially-designed turfboards which are similar to skateboards but with larger wheels and greater stability. Turfboarding is considered to be like snowboarding without the snow.

 

Forms

An Information and Consent for Event/Activity form is required to participate in this activity.

 

Who can participate?

Open to those aged ten and over.

 

Ratio of adults to girls

Normal ratios for activities away from the meeting place are required.   Guiding Manual ratios

 

Regulations

  • The Leader must ensure that all participants under the age of 18 have written permission to take part from an adult with parental responsibility.
  • The local Commissioner must be informed that the activity is taking place.
  • Carry out a risk assessment for the activity.
  • When using a commercial activity provider, ensure it is reputable. You can ask your local Outdoor Activities Adviser to recommend an approved provider.

Useful information

  • If taking part in the activity at a recognised site or provider, request a copy of their safety guidelines and risk assessment; ensure you have read them and communicated any relevant information to the participants.
  • Ensure that somebody has inspected the terrain for holes, rocks, stumps or other obstacles.
  • Ensure the run out at the end is long enough to ride out in the event of brake failure.
  • Ensure the incline of the slope matches the participants’ ability and experience.
  • Be aware if the slope merges with any ‘traffic’ such as hikers, mountain bikers etc.
  • Ensure that the equipment has been checked for possible problems.

If going down a slope, the safest way to carry out this activity is one at a time.

The activity is safer when the participants wear:

  • appropriate footwear
  • knee, elbow, wrist and head protection
  • long sleeves and trousers.
