Description

This activity involves using map and compass skills to navigate from point to point, usually across unfamiliar terrain.

 

Forms

If out of the regular meeting times or place, an Information and Consent for Event/Activity form is required to participate in this activity.

 

Who can participate?

Open to all.

 

Ratio of adults to girls

Normal ratios for activities away from the meeting place are required. Guiding Manual ratios.

 

Regulations

  • The Leader must ensure that all participants under the age of 18 have written permission to take part from an adult with parental responsibility.
  • The local Commissioner must be informed that the activity is taking place.
  • Carry out a risk assessment for the activity.
 

Instructor qualifications

The activity instructor should have a competent understanding of orienteering that is relevant to the age and abilities of the participants, and the terrain being navigated.

 

Useful information

The activity instructor should fully check the course in advance and brief group leaders regarding hazards, boundaries and accident procedures.

On easy or familiar terrain (eg the local park) there should be one instructor for every 20 participants.

On more difficult or unfamiliar terrain there should be one instructor for every ten participants.
