Description

A Guide band is run by Girlguiding UK or by guiding in the local area. A Scout and Guide band is run by The Scout Association but includes members of Girlguiding UK.

 

Forms

If outside the normal meeting times or place, an Information and Consent for Event/Activity form is required to participate in this activity.

 

Who can participate?

Open to members up to the age of 26.

For marching bands, participants must be aged nine or over.

No more than 25 per cent of the band’s members should be aged 18 or over.

 

Ratio of adults to girls

Normal ratios for activities away from the meeting place are required.  Guiding Manual ratios

 

Regulations

  • If leaving the meeting place for performances, the Leader must ensure that all participants under the age of 18 have written permission to take part from an adult with parental responsibility.
  • The local Commissioner must be informed that the activity is taking place.
  • Carry out a risk assessment for the activity.
  • The Commissioner must be satisfied that enough members of Girlguiding UK are interested in joining a proposed band and that there are sufficient resources locally to support the band without detrimental effect on units in the area.
  • Marching bands must have a minimum of 12 members.
  • Marching bands must not cause a public nuisance, especially when passing churches, hospitals etc.
 

Instructor qualifications

  • The bandmaster must complete the Girlguiding UK recruitment process as applicable to the nature of their role, but does not have to be a member.
  • The band also requires at least one Girlguiding UK adult member or recognised volunteer.
  • Both of these roles are to be appointed by the local Commissioner.

If you have musical Guides or Senior Section members aged between 13 and 25 who have achieved a minimum of Grade 5 in an orchestral instrument, why not encourage them to apply to join the National Scout and Guide Orchestra?
